The Carver Integrative Sustainability Center will contribute to the small farmer, rancher, forest landowner, and rural community by: 1) increasing profitability of food/fiber related enterprises, 2) conserving the quality and quantity of resources (natural, capital, and human), 3) increasing access to healthy/nutritious products and lifestyles, and 4) increase the participation of minority groups in rural communities in local, state, and government processes that govern their growth, maintenance, and ultimately their quality of life.

The Carver Integrative Sustainability Center serves as a science based research and resource center focused on technologies and policies that enhance profitability and sustainability of small, socially & historically disadvantaged, underserved, beginning, women and veteran farmers, ranchers, landowners; and related cooperatives and rural communities. The Center functions in the tradition of George Washington Carver as a regional, national and international resource in developing and sharing holistic, earth, farmer, and consumer-friendly agricultural and food innovations; with specific activities including research, education and service.

Welcome to the Carver Integrative Sustainability Center! We are dedicated to continuing the work of Dr. George Washington Carver in using innovative and creative methods of improving the condition of the men, women and children 鈥渇arthest down鈥. This approach includes an integrative approach (Research, Extension, and Education) targeting 4 established pillars of the sustainability: Ecological, Economic, Social, and Health/Wellness. This approach is one that philosophically begins with the needs of the rural stakeholder (farmers, entrepreneurs, families, and communities), and pulls on scientific principles to implement economically, ecologically, and socially appropriate solutions within the context of our stakeholders. The CISC has an established 9 Integrated Research/Extension Programs that step beyond traditional approaches in order to have non-traditional impacts in the established four pillars of sustainability. Our approach is inclusive, as we understand that an ethic that is truly considerate of the people farthest down is one that is considerate of all tools present and their appropriate use.
